چکیده
Land degradation threatens food production especially in smallholder farming systems predominant sub-Saharan Africa. Monitoring the effects of agricultural land uses is critical to guide sustainable intensification (SI). There are various indicators use (SLU), but conventional methods quantify their metrics complex and difficult deploy for rapid large-scale assessments. Considering that SLU dependent on practices, which can be rapidly identified quantified, we propose a framework assessment includes indirect quantifications prioritized (crop productivity, soil organic carbon (SOC), acidification, erosion, nutrient balance) using practices; index derived from integration these indicators. The application case study, consisting 1319 farm plots Tanzania, reveals SOC N balance were main contributors gap. Only 2.2% qualified as being used sustainably. proved sensitive practices commonly by farmers, thus providing an opportunity identify needed revert degradation. Further decision-support tool enhance efficiency SI investments, targeting effectively preserve land.

متن کاملReorienting land degradation towards sustainable land management: linking sustainable livelihoods with ecosystem services in rangeland systems.
This paper identifies new ways of moving from land degradation towards sustainable land management through the development of economic mechanisms. It identifies new mechanisms to tackle land degradation based on retaining critical levels of natural capital whilst basing livelihoods on a wider range of ecosystem services. This is achieved through a case study analysis of the Kalahari rangelands ...
متن کاملLand Use Planning for Sustainable Development
Initially, some notions on sustainable development are dealt with. Since its inception as the new development paradigm there has been a clear shift from a conservation-based ideology to a more development-oriented understanding. Consequently, the parallel development of different perceptions on land use planning is discussed. The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro (1992) and the publication of...
متن کاملSustainable land use under different institutional settings
This paper serves three purposes. First, it gives a short introduction to the concept of sustainability in relation to land use. Moreover, it is easier to assess what is ‘unsustainable’ than what is ‘sustainable’. But that will not suppress the demand for sust...
